Mike was appointed as a part-time defensive assistant at the University of Missouri. His tenure was from 1979 to 1980. Later on, he coached at Weber State College for seven years (from 1981 to 1988). He also served as the inside linebackers coach, the defensive backs coach, and the defensive coordinator.
After a while, he became the defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach for the Washington State Cougars. In 1994, Mike joined the Dallas Cowboys as an assistant coach under Barry Switzer. However, he was then promoted to defensive backs coach.
In early 2017, Mike became the new defensive coordinator for the Atlanta Falcons. He then left the Falcons and became the defensive coordinator for the Cincinnati Bengals. In 2014, Mike replaced Leslie Fraizer and became the head coach for the Minnesota Vikings. After being for eight years with the team, he was fired from the Minnesota Vikings in 2022.
